A Tamil Hindu Wedding at Langar Hall

My first wedding at Langar Hall was an absolute delight as I captured the Tamil Hindu wedding ceremony of Ahranee & Alex. Although I’ve photographed many Hindu weddings over the years, this was my first Tamil Hindu wedding, and I was eager to observe the distinct traditions and symbolism.

The Tamil wedding ceremony is rich in color and symbolism. Conducted in Sanskrit, an ancient and classical language of India, the ceremony is led by the Kurukal (priest). It follows the traditional rituals of the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of Hinduism, and takes place around a sacred fire symbolizing Agni, the god of fire, as the divine witness. This auspicious ceremony is filled with vibrant colors, music, prayers, and profound symbolism.

After the Hindu ceremony, Ahranee & Alex changed into different outfits for a Western-style civil ceremony. The afternoon was filled with sunshine, canapés, speeches, cake cutting, and a first dance in the marquee.

It was a truly wonderful wedding to photograph. Congratulations to Ahranee & Alex!

Information & advice from the newly-weds

Any stories or tales from the proposal?

The proposal was quite funny as I proposed to Alex. About 6 months into our relationship, I threw a packet of taco bell hot sauce at Alex, It said, ‘marry me’ and Alex joked that it was too soon. When the time felt right to propose Taco Bell had stopped making the ‘marry me’ sauces, so I ended up having to propose with a sachet that said fire and a post it note that said ‘Marry me’ on it. Luckily Alex said yes!

Reasons for choosing your venue?

Langar Hall is such a beautiful venue and we fell in love with it the moment we saw it. It had so much character and the grounds are amazing. We just couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. A wedding at Langar Hall it was!

Colour/Style:

Our favourite colour is purple so that was the colour that we tried to have running through both weddings. From the bridesmaids and flowers to the first wedding saree, purple was present.

Any special thoughts/memories from the day?

Ahranee– seeing Alex for the first time under the arch knowing that we were actually going to be getting married and about to start the next chapter of our lives together.

Alex– I knew I was going to start crying but didn’t expect it to happen as soon as the cello started playing. It was such a great day and I loved every bit of it.  I loved the lemon and ring game that we had to do as part of the Hindu ceremony. Honestly, more weddings need a competitive element. I think I was robbed however during the game as the priest never said it was the best 2 out of 3. I won the first round and that’s what mattered!
